A robotic dog for a parent who loved dogs
A guide for families choosing a robotic dog for a parent who grew up with dogs, at home or in care: which model, how to introduce it and what to expect.
Families usually start looking when a parent moves into care and has to leave a dog behind, or when a dog dies and a live replacement is no longer practical. A robotic pup cannot replace that dog. For some people it gives back a daily habit of holding and talking to one.
Choosing the model

Introducing the pup
- Give it without fanfare. Sit it on a lap or beside the person and let them find it.
- Use the person’s own words. If they call it a dog, it is a dog. If they ask whether it is real, answer honestly and simply.
- Tell the care staff it is coming, so they know it belongs to your parent and do not move it to the lounge.
- Try it over a couple of weeks. Some people take to it on the first day, and some never do.
When it may not suit
A robotic pet is not right for everyone. A person who is upset by the idea of a toy, or who feels talked down to, may reject it. Some people become anxious about looking after it. If that happens, take it away quietly, or offer it to the home for shared use.
Funding
Families usually pay for a pup themselves. If your parent is an NDIS participant, a pup can sometimes be claimed as low-cost assistive technology, provided it relates to their disability and a goal in their plan. Robotic pets are not on the Support at Home assistive technology list, so check with the provider before counting on it.
